The Colours of the Wind
Dear Poppy,
By the time you read this letter I will be long gone. My only regret is leaving you, when I could have stayed, If only I were stronger. However, before i say goodbye, there is something you need to know, I apologise in advance for keeping it from you, I never wanted to, I was waiting for the right time to tell you. But I never did and for that I am deeply sorry. I have no idea what the right way to tell you this is, so I will just tell you. We have another sister. Mum gave her up for adoption when she was born. Her name is Violet and she lives in a small village not far away from here. Please find her. I wish I could find her with you, but I’m too weak. You were always the stronger one. I wish you luck for your life in the future, I miss you already. Be strong.
Love, Rose.
So Rose was really gone. Poppy didn’t know what hurt the most, not knowing what her sister had through, not being able to be there for her and help her, finding out she has another sister, through Rose’s suicide letter or simply having lost another member of her family. First her mother, then her brother Aspen and now Rose?
Plus, there was the thing that she had a long-lost sister. Part of her wanted to see Violet but another part of Poppy didn’t as she didn’t want to lose her too, one day. But she knew that she had to find Violet. For Rose also for herself, too.
So Poppy packed a bag, took her cat, Pumpkin with her and went to find her sister. But as soon as she set foot outside her house, Poppy realised she didn’t know the exact place where Violet lived. Sure, she is in a village nearby, but which one? Poppy couldn’t just search all villages for Violet, it would take days!
That same night, Poppy had a strange dream. She was sitting on the ground, in her garden, the air was fresh and the sun was warm, you could also hear a faint tune of a melody that Poppy hadn’t heard since she was a child, she didn’t know why but the wind was colourful; at first it was pink, then blue, then green and then it went back to pink.
Pumpkin sat in front of her and was talking “If you really want to find your sister, you should look through Rose’s journals, the red one to be exact”. Then, Poppy turned around and Rose was standing behind her, smiling. She wore a pink dress with red flowers that matched her curly hair and her eyes were twinkling. Since they were little, Poppy had always been a little jealous of her sister’s eyes. While hers were just green, Rose’s eyes had different colours, her left eye was green too, while her right eye was blue just like their mother’s eyes. “He’s right you know, I did write about Violet there”she said.
Then everything changed. The air became cold, the sun disappeared behind the clouds and the tune stopped playing. “You are waking up” said Rose. “Good luck”.
When Poppy woke up, she sprinted to Rose’s bedroom. However, because of what she found in her journal, she almost wished she hadn’t, there was only a page written in a messy writing, which was very strange since Rose had such a neat and flawless writing . She must have been in a hurry, but why?
Dear Poppy,
If you are reading this, it means that everything I have tried to avoid happened, it also means that you got my message therefore this isn’t the end, now I can communicate with you and I will be able to guide you. You only have a few minutes so read this carefully. Forget about my suicide note, Violet does not exist, I was forced to write that and then I was killed. As soon as you are done here you must run, take Pumpkin and this journal with you and make sure it does not end up in the wrong people’s hands, it’s very important that you listen to me, your life is in danger, you must watch your back at all times .
Go to the attic, there you will find a door, it will take you far away from here. Whatever you do, do not lose the journal always keep it on you, as long as you do they will never find you and never let Pumpkin out of your sight, he’s the key to everything.
Now you must run, before they find you, never come back here, or to any place where you have already been to, you have to be on the run constantly. I will explain everything later, Good luck.
Love, Rose.
After Poppy was done reading, she heard an explosion. “I must hurry” she said to herself as she grabbed the journal and Pumpkin as she bolted out of the door. She quickly reached the attic and jumped through the door, which turned out to be a portal.
She must have been inside the portal for like five minutes, even if it felt more like five hours. ” Another little detail that Rose has managed to leave out” Poppy shouted as she held her stomach “Would it have been too hard to say something like, P.S the door is actually a portal that will make you feel sick and land you in the middle of a road?” She must have been too loud as she noticed that some locals were staring at her.
Where was she going to go now? Was she sent here randomly or on purpose? Poppy didn’t know, but she had a feeling she soon would.
